Private bills ... bite size
All Acts of Parliament start as bills.
There are many different types of bill:
1. Public Bills
2. Private Members Bills
3. Private Bills
4. Hybrid Bills
In this blog I am going to consider private bills.
Private Act can be either Local Acts (which only apply to a local area) or personal Acts (which only apply to a specific institution or individual).
The procedure for a Private Bill is different to that for a Public Bill. The Committee stage is the most important aspect of the legislative process for a Private Bill. For a Public Bill, the Second and Third Readings are more important but these are a formality for a Private Bill.
Examples of Private Bills include University College London Act 1996.
