Studying while parenting
The prospect of returning to study while being a parent of young children can seem like a lot at first.
Here are some tips to help you manage the juggling act of being a parent and a student on the go:
Use a timetable
While this can not only help you work out what you’re doing and when, it can also be useful for your partner and kids to understand your busy times.
Schedule in important activities and non-classroom study time
Whether it’s family, work or learning commitments, schedule important activities to ensure nothing is forgotten, and allocate personal study time so it becomes a part of your weekly routine.
Get the kids involved
If your children are a little older and have homework of their own, make it family study time. This gets the family together for the purpose of learning which sends a great message!
Take “me” time
Remember that study is work, too. Schedule in time for yourself, whether it’s exercise, relaxation time or a hobby you enjoy.
Prioritise
Rather than trying to do everything, aim to achieve the top three items on your to do list.
Ask for help when you need it
Support systems don’t just have to consist of family, although the grandparents and aunties and uncles certainly can help! Also consider friends or other trusted acquaintances that can mind the kids for a while, so you can get in some non-distracted study time.
