Understanding the Occupational Standard

Every official UK apprenticeship is built upon an Occupational Standard. This is the blueprint for the entire programme, ensuring that what you learn meets the real-world needs of the legal industry at a higher, more analytical level.

What is an Occupational Standard?

Developed by leading employers and approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education (IfATE), an Occupational Standard defines what an apprentice must know, be able to do, and how they should behave to be deemed fully competent in a specific job role. The Level 4 standard certifies that you can operate with a significant degree of autonomy and handle complex legal matters.

What is it Made Up Of?

Every standard is structured around three core pillars, known as KSBs:

  • Knowledge: The in-depth technical and theoretical understanding required to analyse legal situations.
  • Skills: The practical ability to apply your knowledge to manage cases and solve complex problems.
  • Behaviours: The professional mindsets and high level of responsibility expected in a legal environment.

Mandatory Qualifications

When you explore apprenticeships, you'll find that some are focused purely on workplace experience, while others include a formal, qualification.

Why the difference?

It often comes down to the industry. In highly regulated and professional fields like law, a formal qualification is a benchmark of quality and a guarantee that an apprentice has gained the deep theoretical knowledge needed to excel.

We are proud that the Level 4 Legal Technician Apprenticeship includes either the Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law & Practice or the Level 4 Diploma in Probate Law & Practice, as it demonstrates our commitment to providing the most robust and valuable training possible.

A Dual Achievement: Experience Plus a Formal Diploma

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you won't just leave with incredible experience. You will also be awarded a nationally recognised diploma from a leading legal awarding body:

  • The Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing Law & Practice

OR

  • The Level 4 Diploma in Probate Law & Practice

Why is this a Major Advantage for You?

Gaining a formal diploma alongside your apprenticeship is a significant career asset. Here’s what it means for you:

  • Industry-Wide Recognition: This isn't just a certificate of completion; it's a formal qualification respected by law firms and legal employers across the entire country.
  • Tangible Proof of Your Expertise: The diploma is concrete, transferable proof of your specialist knowledge, making your CV stand out for future opportunities.
  • Deeper, Structured Learning: It ensures you don't just learn how to do tasks, but you understand the complex legal principles—the why—behind them.
  • A Foundation for the Future: This qualification provides a strong platform for further study, potentially paving the way for you to become a Licensed Conveyancer, or other senior legal professional.

Recognising Your Prior Learning

We believe in building on the knowledge you already have.

If you hold existing legal qualifications (for example, from a previous course or apprenticeship), you may be exempt from certain elements of the diploma.

We will review your prior learning with you at the start of your programme to create a personalised training plan.

A Note on English and Maths

Strong English and Maths skills are essential for a successful career in the legal profession, from communicating with clients to managing important accounts. Our apprenticeship offers tailored, fully-funded support to ensure you have the qualifications you need, with a flexible approach based on your age and prior qualifications.

  • For Apprentices Aged 16-18

If you begin your apprenticeship aged 16, 17, or 18 and do not yet hold a Level 2 qualification (e.g., GCSE at Grade 4/C or above) in English and/or Maths, the rules state that this training is a mandatory part of your programme. We will fully integrate this training into your learning plan, providing all the support you need to achieve these vital qualifications alongside your legal studies.
  • For Apprentices Aged 19 and Over

For our adult learners, the approach offers greater choice and flexibility. Under the new 2025/26 funding rules, if you do not already hold a Level 2 qualification in English and/or Maths, you have the option to include this training in your apprenticeship.

This is a decision made in discussion with you and your employer. If you both agree it would be beneficial for your career, we will add this fully-funded training to your plan. This gives you a fantastic opportunity to gain an extra, valuable qualification to add to your CV at no extra cost. However, if you and your employer decide against it, it is not a mandatory requirement for you to complete your legal apprenticeship.

Proving Your Skills: The Assessment Process

Your apprenticeship journey is designed to build comprehensive legal expertise, and the assessment process is your opportunity to showcase everything you have learned. The entire process is structured into two distinct phases, ensuring you are fully prepared and confident before the final assessment begins.

Phase 1: On-Programme Training & Gateway (First 24 Months)

For the first 24 months, you will be in the "on-programme" phase. This is where you will undertake all your training, guided learning, and workplace experience to master the knowledge, skills, and behaviours of a Legal Technician.

At the end of this period, you will reach the Gateway. This is a formal checkpoint with three key purposes:

  • To confirm you have completed all the required training, including your mandatory qualification.
  • To ensure you have met the minimum requirements for English and Maths (if required).
  • For you, your employer, and us (your training provider) to all agree that you are ready to move forward to the final assessment stage.

Phase 2: The End-Point Assessment (EPA) (Final 3 Months)

Once you pass through the Gateway, you will enter the End-Point Assessment (EPA) period, which typically takes place over the final three months of your programme. The EPA is not just another exam; it's a series of synoptic assessments designed to holistically test your occupational competence. It is conducted by an independent assessment organisation to ensure fairness and impartiality. While the exact components can vary, the EPA for a Level 4 Legal Technician typically includes a combination of the following:

  • Showcase Portfolio: A collection of your best work, gathered during your time on the job, that demonstrates your practical skills and ability to handle real legal tasks.
  • Case Study & Practical Test: You will be presented with a realistic legal scenario and asked to complete a set of tasks, testing your ability to apply your knowledge under timed conditions.
  • Professional Discussion: A structured interview with an independent assessor. You will discuss the work in your portfolio and answer questions that explore the depth of your knowledge and your professional behaviours.

Successful completion of the EPA demonstrates that you have achieved the high standards required of the profession and leads to the award of your Level 4 Legal Technician Apprenticeship.
