The Assessment Structure

At Access Law Online, we recognise that every apprentice starts from a different point. Whether you are new to the legal profession or an experienced technician stepping up, our Level 6 Apprenticeship structure is tailored to your prior qualifications.

Before reviewing the specific assessments, it is important to identify which route applies to you.

WHICH PATHWAY IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Your Pathway Options

The Direct Practitioner Route → Level 4 & 6: This is for individuals entering the profession without prior relevant legal qualifications. This route combines the foundational Level 4 Diploma with the advanced Level 6 Diploma. Total Assessments: 4 Coursework Assignments, 3 Examinations and an End-Point Assessment.

The Progression Route → Level 6 only: This is for individuals who have already completed the Level 4 Diploma in Conveyancing/Probate, or those with exemptions (e.g., Law Graduates, CILEx practitioners). You bypass the foundational elements and focus strictly on the advanced Level 6 Diploma content. Total Assessments: 2 Examinations and an End-Point Assessment

Tailored Exemptions: Recognition of Prior Learning

We understand that not everyone fits neatly into the two pathways above. If you have partial qualifications, we can tailor your assessment plan so you don't repeat what you already know.

  • Partial Law Degrees: If you have an incomplete law degree, you may be exempt from up to 3 of the coursework elements on the Direct Practitioner Route, depending on the modules you passed.
  • LPC or CILEx Qualifications: Students holding the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or specific CILEx Level 6 qualifications may be exempt from up to 2 exams on the Progression Route.

All exemptions are subject to a transcript review by our academic team to ensure your prior learning maps to the current apprenticeship standards.

COURSEWORK

Coursework Assignments

(Applies primarily to the Direct Practitioner Route)

If you are on the Direct Route, you will complete four written assignments. These serve as the building blocks of your legal knowledge, covering essential areas like the English Legal System, Contract Law, and Land Law.

  • Real-World Application: Assignments are not abstract essays; they are scenario-based tasks asking you to solve problems you might face in a real firm.
  • Tutor Feedback: You will receive detailed feedback from expert tutors to help you refine your legal drafting before you tackle the exams.

Note: If you are on the Progression Route, you will likely be exempt from these assignments.

The Examination

The Examination

All apprentices will sit examinations to prove their technical mastery. These exams ensure you have the deep theoretical knowledge required to advise clients on complicated transactions or estate matters.

  • Direct Route: You will sit 3 Examinations.
  • Progression Route: You will sit 2 Examinations.

These exams cover specialist areas such as Conveyancing Law & Practice, Landlord & Tenant, or Wills, Succession & Grants, depending on your chosen stream.

How to Sit Your Exam

We understand that as a senior apprentice or fee-earner, your time is valuable. We offer flexible examination options designed to fit around your professional caseload. You can choose the setting that suits you best:

Sit your exam from the comfort of your home or a quiet private space.

  • How it works: You will use secure software that allows an invigilator to monitor your exam session remotely via webcam. This creates a secure exam environment without the need to travel.

If your employer is a regulated practice, you may be able to take your exams without leaving the office.

  • Eligibility: You can sit exams at your place of work if your firm is regulated by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) or the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
  • Benefit: This is often the most convenient option, minimising disruption to your working day.

Prefer a traditional exam setting? You can attend one of our designated exam centres.

  • How it works: simply book a slot at one of our available locations to sit your assessment in a dedicated, distraction-free environment.

END-POINT ASSESSMENT

The End-Point Assessment (EPA)

Regardless of which route you take, the EPA is the final destination. It is a comprehensive evaluation that confirms you are ready to practice as a fully Licensed Practitioner.

The EPA is conducted by an independent assessor and typically takes place over a 3 to 5-month period after you pass the "Gateway"—the point where you, your employer, and your tutor agree you are ready.

The EPA consists of three distinct assessment methods. You must pass all three to achieve your apprenticeship.

Presentation with Q&A

You will prepare and deliver a professional presentation to your independent assessor on a significant project or complex case you have managed.

  • The Format: A 30-minute presentation followed by a 20-minute question and answer session (50 minutes total).
  • The Content: You will usually choose a topic that demonstrates your ability to improve business processes, manage high-risk transactions, or handle complex client care issues.
  • The Goal: To demonstrate your professional autonomy, critical thinking, and ability to communicate complex legal ideas clearly.

The Professional Interview

This is a structured 60-minute discussion between you and the assessor, underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence (often called a "Showcase") you will have built during the final 6 months of your training.

  • The Portfolio: Before the EPA, you will compile examples of your highest-quality work (e.g., complex drafting, estate accounts, advice on title) that prove you meet the "Day One Outcomes" of a Licensed Practitioner.
  • The Interview: The assessor will ask targeted questions based on your portfolio to test your decision-making, ethical judgement, and commercial awareness.

Integrated Assessment (Case Study)

This component functions as a "double-duty" assessment that counts towards both your Level 6 Diploma and your Apprenticeship EPA.

  • The Format: A timed, scenario-based examination.
  • The Focus: It tests your ability to handle a major transaction from start to finish. For Conveyancers: Typically covers Conveyancing Law & Practice. For Probate: Typically covers The Administration of Estates.
  • Dual Benefit: Passing this assessment is the final tick-box for your Diploma while simultaneously satisfying a core component of your EPA.

Modular Structure

One of the key benefits of our apprenticeship is that assessments are spread out, not piled up at the end. We use a modular structure, allowing you to "bank" your qualifications as you progress.

Your training plan is designed so that you study a specific legal topic, build your confidence, and then sit the assessment for that module while the knowledge is fresh.

WHEN AM I ASSESSED?

When Do Assessments Take Place?

  • For the Direct Practitioner Route: You will complete your coursework assignments at regular intervals to build your core legal knowledge. Once foundations are laid, you will move on to the technical examinations.
  • For the Progression Route: You dive straight into the technical modules, preparing for your two exams.
  • For Everyone: Once your specific exams/coursework are complete and your employer is satisfied with your competence, you pass through the Gateway. The End-Point Assessment period lasts approximately 3 months following the Gateway.

This structure ensures you are never overwhelmed. By the time you reach the EPA, you will have already "banked" the majority of your credits, leaving you free to focus on showcasing your professional competence to the assessor.

HOW WILL MY ASSESSMENTS WORK?

Practitioner Apprenticeship Assessments FAQs

What is the difference between Level 4 and Level 6 EPA?

The Level 6 EPA is more extensive. It includes a longer Professional Interview (60 mins vs 30 mins) and a longer Presentation. It focuses on your ability to work autonomously as a fee earner rather than supporting a team.

How much time will I need to take off work for the EPA?

The EPA assessments themselves (Interview, Presentation, Exam) require only a few hours, but you will need study leave to prepare your portfolio and presentation. Your employer agreement includes time for this "off-the-job" preparation.

When will I get my results?

For your coursework assignments and the exam, you won’t have to wait long—results are typically released within 28 days of your submission or exam date. The End-Point Assessment (EPA) takes a little longer to process as it involves external moderation and final grading; you can generally expect to receive your final apprenticeship result approximately 2–3 months after completing your EPA.

Do I get my CLC Licence immediately after passing?

Passing the apprenticeship gives you the qualification required for the licence. You will then apply to the CLC for your licence, provided you have also logged the required 1,200 hours of practical experience (which your apprenticeship work counts towards).

What happens if I fail an assessment?

First of all, don’t panic. Our pass rates are high because we prepare you thoroughly, but if you do not pass on the first attempt, it is not the end of the road. We have a structured resit process in place. You will receive feedback on where you went wrong, and your tutor will work with you to prepare for your next attempt.

Can I take my exams at home?

Yes. We use secure remote invigilation software that allows you to sit your exams from home or a private space. Alternatively, if your employer is a CLC or SRA regulated practice, you may be able to sit the exam at your office. We also have exam centres available if you prefer a traditional setting.

I have exemptions from a Law Degree. Which route am I on?

You will typically be on the Progression Route. We will conduct a transcript review to confirm your exemptions, but generally, law graduates skip the Level 4 coursework and focus on the Level 6 exams and EPA.
