The Assessment Structure

At Access Law Online, we believe that assessment should be a stepping stone, not a stumbling block. Our assessment structure for the Level 4 Technician Apprenticeship is designed to validate the practical skills you learn on the job and the technical knowledge you gain through study.

Whether you are on the Conveyancing Technician or Probate Technician pathway, your assessments will mirror real-world legal scenarios, ensuring you are fully prepared for life in practice.

The Level 4 apprenticeship is a robust qualification that combines continuous coursework with a final evaluation. To achieve your qualification, you will complete three main components:

COURSEWORK

Coursework Assignments

Throughout your course, you will complete three written assignments. These are designed to test your understanding of core legal principles—such as the English legal system, contract law, and land law—and how they apply to specific conveyancing or probate tasks.

  • Real-world focus: Assignments are scenario-based, asking you to solve problems you might face in a real firm.
  • Feedback: You will receive detailed feedback from your tutors to help you improve as you progress.

The Examination

The Examination

You will sit one examination during your apprenticeship. This exam tests your technical knowledge and ensures you have firmly grasped the essential legal concepts required for a Technician.

  • Format: Online-based assessment.
  • Flexibility: Designed to fit around your work commitments.

How to Sit Your Exam

We understand that as an apprentice, you are balancing work and study. That is why we offer flexible examination options designed to fit around your professional life. You can choose the setting that suits you best:

Sit your exam from the comfort of your home or a quiet private space.

  • How it works: You will use secure software that allows an invigilator to monitor your exam session remotely via webcam. This creates a secure exam environment without the need to travel.

If your employer is a regulated practice, you may be able to take your exams without leaving the office.

  • Eligibility: You can sit exams at your place of work if your firm is regulated by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) or the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
  • Benefit: This is often the most convenient option, minimising disruption to your working day.

Prefer a traditional exam setting? You can attend one of our designated exam centres.

  • How it works: simply book a slot at one of our available locations to sit your assessment in a dedicated, distraction-free environment.

END-POINT ASSESSMENT

The End-Point Assessment (EPA)

The EPA is the final phase of your apprenticeship. It is not just another exam; it is a holistic evaluation designed to prove that you are fully competent and ready to practice as a registered technician.

The EPA is conducted by an independent assessor (someone who has not been involved in your training) and typically takes place over a 3-month period after you pass the "Gateway"—the point where you, your employer, and your tutor agree you are ready.

The EPA consists of three distinct assessment methods. You must pass all three to achieve your apprenticeship.

Presentation with Q&A

You will prepare and deliver a presentation to your independent assessor on a specific project or area of your practice.

  • The Format: A 15-minute presentation followed by a 15-minute question and answer session.
  • The Content: You will usually choose a topic that demonstrates your ability to handle complex client queries, manage risks, or improve a process within your firm.
  • The Goal: To show your communication skills and your ability to apply legal knowledge to real-world business scenarios.

The Professional Interview

This is a structured 30-minute discussion between you and the assessor, underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence you will have built during the final months of your training.

  • The Portfolio: Before the EPA, you will compile examples of your best work (e.g., redacted client emails, file notes, completion statements) that demonstrate you meet the industry standards.
  • The Interview: The assessor will ask you at least 5 targeted questions based on your portfolio. This is your chance to "show off" your work and explain the decisions you made in specific cases.

Integrated Assessment (Case Study)

This component links your academic study directly to your EPA. It is a scenario-based test that functions as the final assessment for your Level 4 Diploma.

  • The Format: Depending on your pathway, this is often an examination or a complex case study completed under timed conditions.
  • The Focus: It specifically tests high-level technical skills, such as Understanding Accounting Procedures or handling a complex Standard Conveyancing Transaction.
  • Dual Benefit: Passing this assessment counts towards both your Diploma qualification and your Apprenticeship EPA.

Modular Structure

One of the key benefits of our apprenticeship is that assessments are spread out, not piled up at the end. We use a modular structure, allowing you to "bank" your qualifications as you progress.

Your training plan is designed so that you study a specific legal topic, build your confidence, and then sit the assessment for that module while the knowledge is fresh.

WHEN AM I ASSESSED?

When Do Assessments Take Place?

  • The Modular Assessments: You will complete your coursework assignments at regular intervals throughout the first phase of your apprenticeship. You will not move on to the next assessment until you have completed the learning for the current one.
  • The Examination: The exam is scheduled only when you are ready, typically after the revision block is complete. Your training plan includes dedicated time for revision and a full mock exam to test your readiness.
  • The End-Point Assessment: The EPA only begins once you have passed the "Gateway"—meaning you have successfully completed all prior assignments and the exam.

This modular approach is designed to support your success and minimize stress. By spreading assessments throughout the course, we avoid the pressure of a single, high-stakes final exam covering two years of material. Instead, you can "bank" your qualifications as you go, gaining confidence and regular feedback with every completed module. Crucially, this structure protects your work-life balance; with revision time built directly into your training plan, you can focus on learning without the need for last-minute cramming.

IS FUNDING AVAILABLE?

Funding & Payment Options

A conveyancing apprenticeship is an affordable route into the legal profession, with significant apprenticeship funding available. Apprentices do not pay for their apprenticeship training.

For Employers, funding for an apprenticeship in conveyancing is available through:

Additional Incentives:

  • 100% funding for small employers hiring apprentices aged 16–18
  • £1,000 government incentive for eligible apprentices aged 16–24
  • £3,000 care leaver bursary paid directly to the apprentice

HOW WILL MY CAREER PROGRESS?

Career Progression

Demand for skilled conveyancing and probate professionals remains high, and our apprenticeships give you a structured route from entry-level roles to senior, qualified positions.

Level 4 → Technician: Completing the Level 4 apprenticeship leads to a Conveyancing Technician or Probate Technician role, giving you the foundation to handle standard transactions and support more senior colleagues.

Level 6 → Licensed Practitioner: Advancing to the Level 6 programme leads to becoming a Licensed Conveyancer or Licensed Probate Practitioner. This qualification is equivalent to a degree and is achieved through the level 6 diploma in conveyancing law and practice (also available as the level 6 diploma in conveyancing law and practice online).

Further Opportunities

With the diploma in conveyancing law and practice level 6, you can progress into:

  • Team Leader or Manager – leading a conveyancing or probate team
  • Firm Owner – run and manage your own regulated practice
  • Solicitor Route – use the Level 6 Diploma as your degree-equivalent qualification to sit the SQE, with apprenticeship experience counting toward QWE

This progression pathway gives you a clear route from technician to licensed practitioner — and ultimately to senior, autonomous roles within the legal sector.

HOW WILL MY ASSESSMENTS WORK?

Technician Apprenticeship Assessments FAQs

What happens if I fail an assessment?

First of all, don’t panic. Our pass rates are high because we prepare you thoroughly, but if you do not pass on the first attempt, it is not the end of the road. We have a structured resit process in place. You will receive feedback on where you went wrong, and your tutor will work with you to prepare for your next attempt.

Can I take my exams at home?

Yes. We use secure remote invigilation software that allows you to sit your exams from home or a private space. Alternatively, if your employer is a CLC or SRA regulated practice, you may be able to sit the exam at your office. We also have exam centres available if you prefer a traditional setting.

How much time will I need to take off work for assessments?

You should not need to use your annual leave. Apprenticeships require "off-the-job" training, and your assessment preparation and exam time are included in this. Your training plan is agreed upon with your employer in advance, so they will know exactly when you need time away from your desk to study or sit an exam.

Do I have to wait until the end of the 2 years to be assessed?

No. We use a modular structure. You will complete assignments for the English Legal System, Contract Law, and Land Law modules individually as you progress through the course. This allows you to "bank" your grades and clear modules one by one, rather than facing a mountain of exams at the very end.

I have a learning difficulty (e.g., Dyslexia). Can I get extra support?

Absolutely. We are committed to making our assessments accessible to everyone. If you have a learning difficulty or disability, we can arrange "Reasonable Adjustments" such as extra time during exams, specific font requirements, or other support aids. Please speak to our team when you enrol so we can put this in place for you.

What is the difference between the Coursework and the EPA?

Coursework consists of assignments you complete during your training to check your understanding of specific topics (like Land Law). The End-Point Assessment (EPA) happens only after you have finished all your training; it is a final, "big picture" check to prove you are fully competent and ready to work as a qualified Technician.

Are the assignments theoretical or practical?

They are a mix, but with a heavy focus on the practical. While you need to understand the theory (the law), our assignments are scenario-based. You will often be asked to apply the law to a fictional client situation, just as you would in your day-to-day job.

When will I get my results?

For your coursework assignments and the exam, you won’t have to wait long—results are typically released within 28 days of your submission or exam date. The End-Point Assessment (EPA) takes a little longer to process as it involves external moderation and final grading; you can generally expect to receive your final apprenticeship result approximately 2–3 months after completing your EPA.
